Seeing TCP/UDP ports on each end of a conversation

Guys:
great product - I like it.
One thing I seem to be having problems with: you do not seem to display the port numbers from *both* ends of a conversation. The trouble is, you can see that Host A and Host B are conversing using protocol X, but how do you tell who initiated the conversation?

I saw a reference to packet & capture / decode in a future release. I understand that, but this is more basic functionality than that.

Am I missing somthing obvious?

Cheers,
Ron

For every connection to a port (say port 80, HTTP), the client side port is dynamically generated, and for one single web page, there might be hundreds of connections to download the page.

This would generate 100 conversations for this one session, so this is not practical.

Bjorn:
agreed.
But without that information, how do you tell who initiated the conversation?
(it really matters)

Try starting the probe manually with the -dump option, this will print out the packets and you can find out the client/server port numbers.

See http://objectplanet.com/Probe/doc/advanced_dump.html for more info on this.

Yes, but how do you translate "java -jar Probe.jar -dump" for those of us using Windows?

1. Start -> Run - > cmd
2. cd\"program files\network probe 1.1.1"
3. java -jar Probe.jar -dump

If an instance of Network Probe is already running, add "-port 7031" as an extra parameter:
java -jar Probe.jar -dump -port 7031

If you only have Microsoft's Java VM (jview), use this command instead:
jview /cp Probe.jar com.objectplanet.probe.server.Probe -dump -port 7031
