We have not received other reports about this problem, but will investigate this further. This looks like a bug in the JVM to me. You could try with JRE 1.3.x. Please tell us if you still have problems.

I found one possible bug in the name lookup code and added some exception catching code around it. It may or may not prevent the above from happening.

The fix is available for 0.4 beta 2.

I receive the same error in 1.4.1_01. I will attempt to try my application with 1.4.1 beta 2 to see if the problem goes away. I think the core network problem that causes my crash is related to a faulty DNS server that my company uses.

My OS has no viruses; however I suspect my disabled firewall might have something to do with my crashes.
Don't ask.

Any way to discover a bug or should I just scrape the O'l hard drive?

A bit late to answer this, but I ran into the same problem in my java code and it occurs only with some IP addresses that I try to resolve...

I've yet to try a new JVM, the one I'm using is 1.4.0. Anyway, Here's one that generates the error:

The code never reaches the Exception because the Java machine crashes the program to it's death.

import java.net.InetAddress;

public class TestInet
{
public static void main(String[] _args)
{
String strIp = "195.212.33.0";
try
{
System.out.println("ip = " + strIp);
InetAddress addr = InetAddress.getByName(strIp);
System.out.println("name = " + addr.getCanonicalHostName());
}
catch (Exception ex)
{
System.out.print(" - unable to resolve host name");
}
}
}
