I had the same problem with Ubuntu 8.04.02 and the latest Java, when searching for a solution I've found that someone had success in the past on some redhat version, so I decided to try and installed CentOS 5.3 with all the up to date programs.
Kernel 2.6.18-128.el5 x86_64
Java Version 1.6.0_17

Guess what? I doesn't work!
I get the same annoying error about the libdriverif.so!
I also tried to download patched versions of the libdriverif.so to no avail

Is there a way to make this work?
The windows version of this program works great and it's exactly what we need, but we need to make it work on a linux server too.
Thanks in advance.

Howdy,

I am running FreeBSD 7 and noticed the same problem. I would run the verbose mode though and I got this:

urmomshouse# java -jar Probe.jar -verbose
2010/01/22 08:43:54 Probe (main): /usr/local/netprobe/driver/freebsd/libdriverif.so: Shared object "libpcap.so.4" not found, required by "libdriverif.so"
2010/01/22 08:43:54 Error: Could not load native ethernet driver: /usr/local/netprobe/driver/freebsd/libdriverif.so

I was stumped at first, but then I noticed the 'libpcap.so.4', so from FreeBSD's ports i installed libpcap. Tested again, same problem. Then after further digging, I noticed i needed the actual compat6x:

/usr/ports/misc/compat6x

make install

After that, I did a 'rehash' and fired up Network Probe again:

urmomshouse# java -jar Probe.jar -verbose
2010/01/22 09:25:11 Probe startup initialized...
2010/01/22 09:25:11 loading protocol definitions...

This is the first time Network Probe is started.
