Hi, we have a server with these hardware specifications:

CPU: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X3210 @ 2.13GHz (2133.42-MHz K8-class CPU)
Origin = "GenuineIntel" Id = 0x6fb Stepping = 11
[...]
real memory = 4294967296 (4096 MB)
avail memory = 4105908224 (3915 MB)
ACPI APIC Table: <DELL PE_SC3 >
FreeBSD/SMP: Multiprocessor System Detected: 4 CPUs
[...]
da0 at mpt0 bus 0 target 0 lun 0
da0: <Dell VIRTUAL DISK 1028> Fixed Direct Access SCSI-5 device
da0: 300.000MB/s transfers
da0: Command Queueing enabled
da0: 139236MB (285155328 512 byte sectors: 255H 63S/T 17750C)
[...]

And we are using FreeBSD-8 amd64.

We are running the database (mysql-5.1) on the same machine where apache and tomcat are running.
We are running Opinio 6.2.2 Enterprise.

We launch tomcat using these variables:
/usr/local/jdk1.5.0/bin/java -Xms128M -Xmx1024M -Djava.endorsed.dirs= -classpath /usr/local/tomcat5.5/bin/bootstrap.jar:/usr/local/tomcat5.5/bin/commons-logging-api.jar: -Dcatalina.base=/usr/local/tomcat5.5 -Dcatalina.home=/usr/local/tomcat5.5 -Djava.io.tmpdir=/usr/local/tomcat5.5/temp org.apache.catalina.startup.Bootstrap start

And this is our my.cnf:
[client]
port = 3306
socket = /tmp/mysql.sock
default-character-set=utf8

[mysqld]
log-warnings=2
port = 3306
socket = /tmp/mysql.sock
skip-locking
init_connect='SET collation_connection = utf8_general_ci'
init_connect='SET NAMES utf8'
default-character-set=utf8
character-set-server = utf8
collation-server = utf8_general_ci

key_buffer = 128M
max_allowed_packet = 64M
sort_buffer_size = 4M
read_buffer_size = 2M
read_rnd_buffer_size = 8M
myisam_sort_buffer_size = 64M
thread_cache_size = 8
query_cache_size = 32M
thread_concurrency = 4

# Disable Federated by default
skip-federated

[mysql]
default-character-set=utf8
log-warnings=2

We're read perfomances hints here: http://www.objectplanet.com/opinio/userguide/index.htm?page=performance_hints.html but I see no bottleneck in disk usage:

device r/s w/s kr/s kw/s wait svc_t %b
da0 0.0 1.5 0.0 23.5 0 12.4 1

I see no problems at all.

We have a reverse proxy in front of apache22+tomcat caching images, css and ico.

But we're experiencing performance issues (slowness, timeout) when there are more than 800 online/ongoing respondents (looking at /poll/admin/systemStatus.do?action=viewSystemStatus).

600-700 online respondent is a limit of this setup (so I need to extend it using a cluster) or there are tweaks I can do to perform better using this setup?

Thanks in advance,
Davide
