Max length on open ended questions.

In the current version (6.05), is there any way to control the amount someone can put into a open ended text box. I know that it maxes out at 64k, but certainly there is a way to control that. The max chars box is there, but it is inactive and unusable (shaded out). Any ideas?
Thanks!

We are aware of this, and it is a bit confusing. The max characters attribute is not working at all since the html tag textarea doesn't support the maxlength attribute. There are fixes on this around on the web, but then the survey requires javascript installed. We should remove this attribute in future releases, to avoid the confusion. There exists, however, a free text validator plugin that handles the length check on an open ended question.
The plugin can be downloaded from our plugin central (download the "Free text validator" plugin at the top): http://www.objectplanet.com/opinio/plugins.html
The max length value can be set from the "Edit question" page, in the plugin validators section.

Hi guys,
I have a similar problem: my Open Ended questions are all set to a max length of 255 characters and this is impossible to change, it's greyed out. Installing this plugin didn't fix the issue. Any ideas?

I have the same problem...where the max char is grayed out to only only 255 characters.
Were you able to figure this out?
Please advise. Thanks! Michelle

Hi, this is fixed in later versions.
The reason why this was implemented this way is that javascript was not used to limit max length in earlier versions. HTML does not allow limitation of the length of input in textarea-tags, so the limit only applied when single-line fields were used (input-tags).
It is now done with Javascript, and the problem is solved.

Eivind,
We are still running Opinio 6.0.5. Quite some time ago we had downloaded the Free text validator plugin and we were able to get the text length in open-ended questions to expand via the Plugin validator method. However, we are now finding that when we create surveys in Firefox 10.0.2 and IE 9 we cannot get past the 255 character length no matter what we put in the plugin validator field for Max text length.
Yet with older surveys that we had created in earlier versions of IE and Firefox and have copied, e.g., for our evaluation templates, the open-ended max lengths are kept in the copied surveys, e.g., 10 rows, 75 columns set at 750 characters in the Free text max length in the plugin-validator does allow for that number of characters.
Is the issue with these newly created surveys their creation in a later browser versions?
